Echo Park School Test Results are Mixed, Part II

Echo Park students are all over the map when it comes to performing at proficient or advanced levels in English and math.

The California Standards Test (CST) scores elementary students on their performance in English-Language Arts and Math, and the results for Echo Park students are mixed, as evidenced by a report issued this week.

Some 54 percent of students all across California proved to have proficient or advanced understand of English-Language Arts. Half, or 50 percent, had scores that indicated proficient or advanced mastery of Math.

"Proficient" is the State Board of Education's goal for all students.

English and Language Arts: All grade levels scored below the state average of 54 percent.

51 percent of fourth graders earned scores proving proficient or advanced levels of English and Language Arts, which was just below the state average. Other grade levels didn't perform well. 38 percent of second graders, 30 percent of fifth graders, 26 percent of sixth graders and 25 percent of third graders had proficient or advanced knowledge of ELA.

Mathematics: Three grade levels surpassed the state average of 50%, one grade fell just below while one grade scored far below.

Logan students fared a little better on the mathematics portion of the CST. Fourth graders performed exceptionally well: 81 percent proved proficient or advanced performance in mathematics. Second and third graders also out-performed the state, with 54 and 60 percent proving proficient or above knowledge of math. Fifth graders just missed the mark with 45 percent, while the sixth graders lagged with only 26 percent proving proficient or advanced math knowledge.

English and Language Arts: Three grades hovered around the state average of 54 percent, while two grades were below the state average.

59 percent of fourth graders scored proficiently or above in English and language arts. They were the only grade to score above the state average of 54 percent. The second and third graders were pretty much on par with the rest of the state, with 51 and 52 percent respectively showing proficient or advanced knowledge of ELA. Fifth and sixth graders were just below the state average, with 47 and 49 percent scoring proficiently or above.

Mathematics: Four grades scored well above the state average of 50 percent, while one grade was 1 percent over.

Mayberry students performed comparatively well to the rest of the state. Sixth graders were at average performance, with 51 percent scoring proficiently or above. Second and fifth graders proved to have just about the same mastery of their level mathematics, with 60 and 61 percent performing proficiently or advanced. Meanwhile, 68 percent of fourth graders and 79 percent of third graders had proficient or advanced knowledge of math.
