Blog: Union Elementary School Educates the Community about Climate Science

Social Justice Educators at our local Union Avenue ES reached out and asked for community support of this wonderful event they will be holding.

"Students discuss the possibility of a world free of carbon fuel combustion"

We are having a climate science action at Union. Three hundred fifty students will form the digits "350" on the school playground while the school bell rings for 46 seconds and students make noise. After the "attention signal," five students will address topics of carbon fuel combustion, health effects, climate change, costs, and alternatives. Each student will speak about two minutes in English and two in Spanish.

Students from Union Avenue Elementary School in the Los Angeles Unified School

District (LAUSD) want to educate people on Earth Day about global warming and climate science and to make leaders more aware of the urgent need to replace carbon fuel combustion with renewable energy.

Hundreds of students will form the digits “350” on the playground while the school bell rings and students ring bells, play music, and blow whistles.

After the bell students from Union’s Beyond Carbon Science Club will speak in English and Spanish about the negative effects that burning fossil fuels have on the health of children and other people. They will also talk about the climate impacts locally and globally. They will emphasize the great costs of our current transportation and electrical production systems and our state’s potential for renewable energy.
