Partnership Creates $18 Million Rental Subsidy Fund for Homeless

An $18 million housing rental subsidy program is aimed at providing safe and affordable housing for homeless patients in Los Angeles County who suffer from complex physical and behavioral health conditions, it was announced Wednesday.

The Flexible Housing Subsidy Pool is the result of a collaboration between the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services, the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation and others.

The pool is expected to provide housing subsidies for at least 2,400 people, who will be linked with intensive case management services to support them in their transition to permanent housing and to achieve long-term housing stability, according to DHS Director Dr. Mitchell Katz.

"We see this pool as an essential tool in our effort to end homelessness for L.A.'s chronically homeless residents living with complex medical and behavioral health conditions, who are often the highest utilizers of expensive emergency health care services," Katz said.

The goals of the subsidy pool are to improve the health outcomes for vulnerable populations, reduce costs to the public health system, and help end homelessness in Los Angeles County, according to the DHS.
