VIDEO: Garcetti to Launch Runoff Campaign Wednesday in Atwater Village

Councilman faces City Controller Wendy Greuel in the election for Los Angeles mayor on May 21.

With his place in the May 21 runoff election for Los Angeles mayor certain, Councilman Eric Garcetti urged an election night crowd at the Hollywood Avalon to meet him in Atwater Village Wednesday to launch the next phase of his campaign.

Garcetti will face city Controller Wendy Greuel, whom he led Tuesday in the final vote, 33 percent to 29 percent.

Garcetti's election-night speech was similar to many he had given through the early campaign.

He emphasized the need for jobs and cited his success in creating economic growth, particularly in Hollywood, but throughout his district, which includes Echo Park, Silver Lake and Atwater Village.

Garcetti tried to distinguish himself from Greuel by saying the choice came down to  "identifying problems" or "solving them."

He also called Greuel a "formidable opponent" and "someone who will hopefully elevate the conversation in this race."

The Garcetti campaign's kickoff event will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Van de Kamps Innovation Center, 2930 Fletcher Drive.
