Garcetti to Move From Silver Lake to Getty House Soon

City crews have been working since July 1 to perform "deferred maintenance" on the 92-year-old  property at 605 S. Irving Blvd., taking advantage of the transition from the administration of former Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa to that of Eric Garcetti, who took office in July, mayoral spokeswoman Vicki Curry said.

The work includes asbestos and lead paint removal, termite spraying, lock replacement, carpentry, electrical and water damage repairs, and interior and exterior painting, she said.

Garcetti recently announced that he and his family, now living in Silver Lake, have decided to move into Getty House in a few weeks.

The repairs were already being performed prior to their decision to move, Garcetti said today while taking part in City Hall menorah-lighting festivities.

The Getty House, which Los Angeles' mayors have used for greeting dignitaries and holding luncheons, speaking events and other functions, is considered a "public building used for public services," Garcetti noted.

The repairs to the Tudor Revival-style residence in Windsor Square, a historic district near Hancock Park, were going to be done "regardless," he said. "We hold events there all the time."

He added that his family will pay for any repairs or upgrades to the private quarters of the house.

The house was gifted to the city in 1975 by the Getty Oil Co.
