Midnight Ridazz Founder Calls Bike Lanes in Silver Lake 'Too Narrow' (Video)

The legendary "Roadblock" mounted a camera on his bike and took a two-mile route along Sunset from East Hollywood to Silver Lake. It was tough going.

KCET's Departures website features a video from local cycling hero Roadblock.

The cycling pioneer, of course, helped found Echo Park's Midnight Ridazz bike group.

Recently, Roadblock took a lunchtime ride along Sunset Boulevard, starting in East Hollywood and ending in Silver Lake.

You can see the video in our gallery, which ends with a "teachable moment" for a motorist. (See Roadblock's Safety Tip Number 5 below.)

Roadblock notes in a post that goes along with the video that the bike lanes along that stretch of Sunset are simply too narrow:

Staying in them at speeds greater than 15 mph along this fast corridor would be dangerous. Note my lane position in the video.

He also notes (correctly) that fear keeps a lot of Angelenos off the streets, and outlines five tips for the timid that also show up in the video:

1. Cyclists need to stay out of the door zone.

2. Keep a consistent straight line even when passing large gaps between parked cars.

3. Pass on the left.

4. Anticipate traffic.

5. Act in a calm yet educational manner when confronting drivers.

Regarding the last item, tell us what you think of how Roadblock did on that score in the video in comments below.
