Tanker Fire Results In No Affected Wildlife

An update at the Griffith Park Resource Board Meeting announces no fuel went into the river.

The Department of Fish and Game announced that no wildlife was harmed after a tanker flipped and caught fire in a tunnel at the interchange of the Golden State (5) and Glendale (2) freeways, a field representative of Assembly Member Mike Gatto told the Griffith Park Resource Board last week.

While some of the vegetation was burned off, Field Representative Eric Menjivar said only about five gallons of fuel leaked into the sandbar. The sandbar prevented the fuel from going into the river.

“We’re extremely fortunate,” Menjivar said.

The fire caused the 5 to be closed for nearly three days as Caltrans cleared the damage. City News Service reported the hazardous materials fire began in the tanker truck, which was carrying up to 8,700 gallons of fuel.
