Silver Lake Reservoir Path Suddenly Not So Safe

Two robberies and at least one car break-in along the Silver Lake Reservoir are making locals nervous.

Two robberies in two weeks along the Silver Lake Reservoir path have locals on edge.

According to an officer at the LAPD's Northeast Division, street robbers have now taken electronic equipment twice from people enjoying the popular running and walking venue.

According to the officer, the LAPD hopes to catch them quickly.

The Eastsider posted an email Tuesday from the second of the victims, who was accosted from behind about 8 p.m. Monday at Hawick and West Silver Lake Drive:

I was grabbed from behind and pushed to the ground by three young guys. They started yelling at me to give up my cell phone but I held onto it. They ended up grabbing my headphones and ran. I was fortunate because I was only left with some bloody scrapes on my knees and a cut on my neck – most likely from when they grabbed my headphones.

According to the email, witnesses said the men got into a silver or gray car. According to the email, "they appeared to be in their teens or early 20s" and were wearing dark clothes and hoodies.

It is not known whether the other robbery last week also took place on the west side of the lake.

There may also be a reason for drivers to be careful when they park in the area.

The SUV owned by Echo Park-Silver Lake Patch was broken into on Tuesday evening sometime between 5 and 6 p.m.

It was parked just north of the Dog Park on Silver Lake Boulevard, a busy area at a busy time of day. The burglars apparently used the cover of the trees along the sidewalk there to break a right, rear passenger window and grab a black bag on the rear seat.

Vehicle burglaries have been an ongoing issue for Silver Lake in general, but according to an officer at LAPD's Northeast Division, this was probably a random event and not a sign of an ongoing problem at the Reservoir.

Nonetheless, be sure to park your car in a visible, clear area--West Silver Lake Drive just below the Recreation Center is a  good place.

Leave even seeming valuables out of sight too.
