The incident occurred in front of 1415 West Temple St .at 9:15 p.m. Monday, said Sgt. S. Bailey of the Los Angeles Police Department's Central Traffic Division.

"The vehicle was westbound on Temple in the No. 1 lane when it struck the pedestrian in the northbound crosswalk and it didn't stop, continuing westbound on Temple and turning southbound on La Veta Terrace," Bailey said.

Investigators believe speed may have been a factor, he said.

"If you get in an accident, the worst thing you can do is not stop," Bailey said. If you do stop, "you won't go to jail. You might get a ticket, an infraction, but it becomes a felony when you leave the scene."
