Update: Car Chase Through Echo Park and Silver Lake Ends in Shoot Out

The chase began just after 6 p.m. in Echo Park when the police identified a man driving a stolen car. The man, a suspect in a murder, was finally apprehended at Bixel and Seventh streets after being shot by police.

Update: A murder suspect is hospitalized in critical but stable condition Wednesday morning after a shoot out with officers near Downtown Los Angeles Tuesday evening.

Police say the suspect was shot in the legs after he produced a rifle at the end of a vehicle chase lasting more than an hour.

City News Service is verifying that the man reportedly sent a text to a friend saying he would not be taken alive.

According to KCBS 2, he may be related to Jack Schlesinger, who was shot and killed by LAPD officers in September 2010 after a similar shoot out scenario.

Earlier:  The suspect is now in custody after reportedly being injured in gunfire.

Police surrounded the car at Bixel and Seventh streets around 7:15 p.m. after the driver crashed into another car.

The man, who had been reported as being armed, came out of the car and fired. Police fired back.

According to a preliminary report from Fox 11, the man has a brother who was killed by Rampart officers.

The location is just a few blocks from the Rampart Division heaquarters on Sixth Street.

Earlier reports said the man had an AK-47 and was a suspect in a murder.

The around Wilshire and Bixel has been closed down as police investigate the incident.

Earlier: Police have been chasing a what they think might be a stolen vehicle since about 6 p.m. Tuesday.

The chase has brought helicopters to the air and vehicles to local streets including Virgil and Hoover Streets and Sunset Boulevard.

The chase began at Sunset Boulevard and Rosemont Avenue when the police noticed a white Honda sedan that several reports said was carjacked this morning.

The chase had come as far west as Hollywood, with CBS2 reporting that as many as 7 police cars were trailing the driver.

According to reports, the suspect is armed and dangerous and has been spotted talking on a cellphone.
