Arraignment Delayed for Dodgers Beating Suspects

Police Chief Charlie Beck also decided not to release mug shots of the two suspects, whose arraignment was put off until August.

Arraignment has been postponed until August for two men accused of attacking San Francisco Giants fan Bryan Stow in the parking lot of Dodger Stadium on opening day.

Louie Sanchez, 29, and Marvin Norwood, 30, remain jailed in lieu of  $500,000 bail. Although they are charged only with mayhem, assault and battery, prosecutors say in court papers the severity of the beating made it more like attempted murder.

Attorneys for one of the defendants, Marvin Norwood, had asked the  court to reduce his bail from $500,000 to the more usual $100,000 for such cases.

Judge Shelly Torrealba declined requests from the media to have cameras in the courtroom for the hearing.

Los Angeles Police Department Chief Charlie Beck had scheduled an afternoon news conference, at which the department was expected to release mug shots of the men, but the event was canceled at the urging of prosecutors.

Beck had said on Friday that he hope the media would refrain from publishing photos of the suspects, though many have done so.

A bail hearing for Sanchez was scheduled for Aug. 1. The arraignment is set for Aug. 10.

Both men are charged with mayhem, assault by means likely to produce great bodily injury and battery with serious bodily injury, all felonies, according to the District Attorney's Office. A third suspect, Dorene Sanchez, who may have driven the get-away vehicle, has yet to be charged.

Sanchez’s attorney Gilbert  Quinones of La Puente talked to reporters after the hearing.

He said, based on what he knew about his client, he seemed unlikely to have done the acts, though he did say Sanchez was at the game on March 31.

He declined to answer reporters’ questions about two other misdemeanor counts of battery stemming from another alleged run-in the same day, when Sanchez is alleged to have attacked another man and woman.
