Shepard Fairey to Paint Anti-War Mural in Silver Lake

Baller Art Ware invites the Echo Park muralist and provocateur to leave a message.

There's fresh red paint on the shed outside the Baller Art Ware on Tracy Street in Silver Lake.

It's freshly painted because on Monday Shepard Fairey and his team will create a new mural there.

It will say "Make Art, Not War," in white letters reversed out of the red background.

The photo above is a mock up.

Baller manager Carol Blanding invited Fairey to paint the piece through his best friend, who she has known for many years.

Fairey is also a Baller customer, stopping by for paints and other materials on occasion.

A long-time Silver Lake resident, Blanding knew the busy commuter traffic on Hyperion Avenue would make sure the message wasn't lost on folks.

The building's owners have also approved the installation.

AND TELL US: What do you think of this new mural going up along changing Hyperion Avenue?  Do you have any advice for Fairey?

"Fairey is also a Baller a customer" ... "I can't a wait to see the mural once it's a finished!" ... "Will be a nice to look at while sitting eating my tomato pizza a pie!"

Will be intereseting to see if grafitti providers treat this work better than what they've done to my dad's self portrait opposite Rockaway Records on Glendale Blvd. Over time they've obliterated the lower part of that. Police seem impotent. I'm recording this in my book series "The Neutras, Then & Later" available on Amazon.

This is a step in the right direction. If Fairey were truly antiwar, though, he wouldn't have supported someone like Obama, who has been expanding war and civilian-killing drone strikes into multiple lands.
(But didn't Obama end the war in Iraq? Sure, if you count his unsuccessfully trying to renegotiate Bush's Status of Forces Agreement with Iraq -- in order to allow more troops to stay there -- as "ending" that war. And of course, he escalated our involvement in Afghanistan by raising troop levels 50%, and thousands of NATO troops are slated to remain even after we "withdraw.") In announcing his support for Obama's reelection in 2012, Fairey wrote: "I could go on and on about the flaws of the system itself, but short of a violent revolution (which I don't advocate), the only way to improve the governance of the country, and the system itself, is to vote people in who will make positive changes for government and for the people."

I, too, would not advocate violent revolution, but there's this little thing that was behind phenomena like the Civil Rights Movement, the Indian Independence Movement, and the Polish Solidarity Movement called nonviolent resistance -- which doesn't depend on simply voting for the lesser of two evils. Sometimes the political system is so ossified and corrupted that you have to work outside of how it is currently set up. Given our present militarism, the domination of our political system by wealthy elites, and growing economic inequality, now is such a time in America.
Hopefully, the now relatively-dormant Occupy Movement was just a first phase in a nonviolent movement to bring us to a more peaceful, equitable, and sustainable society. Mr. Fairey would do well to lend his talents to such efforts, and not be so wedded to politicians who stand in the way.

Shepherd Fairey supports sweatshop labor in China, and whines that he has to.

The fourth Amendment to the United States Constitution states that: the right of the people to beRead More secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized "this fundamental right has a tense relationship with sobriety checkpoints, at a sobriety checkpoint, drivers are necessary stopped with out reasonable suspicion, and may be tested summarily and with out probable cause, Thus the constitution would prohibit people from being stopped without a search Warrant or at least without probable cause that they have committed a crime; however, the Warrant requirement only attaches should the search be unreasonable and the Supreme Court, as shown below, decided that such stops are not unreasonable under certain circumstances, The United States Supreme Court found properly conducted sobriety checkpoints to be Constitutional, While acknowledging that such checkpoints infringed on a Constitutional Right. Although the U.S. Supreme Court has found sobriety checkpoints to be constitutionally permissible, ten states (Idaho,Iowa,Michigan,Minnesota,Oregon,Rhode Island, Texas,Washington,Wisconsin, and Wyoming) have found that sobriety roadblocks violate their own State Constitutions or have outlawed tHEM.

Again, if you see a checkpoint you can still legally turn around or change directions to avoid it asRead More long as you are not already in it. Learn your rights. But don't drink and drive. Call Northeast LAPD to go to take the LAPD Community Based Police Academy course. It's free. Of course, Northeast doesn't let others know about it. You learn your rights a lot of other information they would rather not have you know. Call them and ask how to attend.

The fact that they are outlawed in some states AND what the constitution says , they areRead More UN-constitutional whether you can avoid them or not, same as checking your citizenship up to 100 miles north of Mexican border (as you simply drive down the road), no probable cause etc.

The 125th at Logan was great. Parents, students, former teachers, some alumni from the 1940's. ButRead More what is most essential to keep in mind is that Logan, a public school, has educated generations of Echo Park children, natives and immigrants, English-speaking and those learning English, respecting the diverse cultures of families that have made their homes in our community. It's a public school that serves all children, those with children with disabilities, those who have behavior issues, all children. It turns away no one. It does what public schools are supposed to do; it educates the public. And it welcomes parents to participate in decision-making bodies that can influence their child's education.
