Silver Lake Neighborhood Council to Discuss Transgender Task Force

A change to the organization's bylaws and the creation of a new ad hoc committee are proposed.

The Silver Lake Neighborhood Council will hold a board meeting next week, and a proposal to create a Transgender Task Force, or ad hoc committee, is on the agenda.

Teresa Sitz is introducing the measure as well as an amendment to the council's bylaws to include people who are transgender. While Sitz is co-chair of the council's education committee, she said the views are her own and do not represent the Silver Lake Neighborhood Council. The task group would serve an important role, according to Sitz.

"It's to work on policies, actions and events we can do over the next six months leading up to the Transgender Day of Remembrance on November 20," Sitz said. "It's the mission of the Silver Lake Neighborhood Council to 'honor diversity and build community,' and I feel that this proposed amendment to the bylaws and the creation of a Transgender Task Force is a further step in that direction."

The public is allowed to attend the meeting and speak out on both items as well as others to be discussed.

The Silver Lake Neighborhood Council meeting is scheduled to take place at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, June 5, in the auditorium of Micheltorena Elementary School at 1511 Micheltorena St.
