Alert: Muggings on the Silver Lake Path

Simple safety tips can help keep you from becoming a victim. And let's work to improve the safety of the Path for all users!

Many neighbors are now aware of two recent muggings and attempted robberies of joggers on the West Silver Lake Drive Path. All of us are very concerned about these disturbing events on what has been a safe community place for exercise and relaxation, so it's important to know what steps we can take every day to be aware and prevent any more such crimes.

It's a sign of our community's strength that so many visitors enjoy and feel safe on our path, virtually 24 hours a day. But we're still in a large city, so always observe these essential safety tips:

  1. First and foremost, BE AWARE! Step out of that runner's high and take notice of people and things around you! See something or a group that doesn't look quite right? Cross the street or change your movement so you can better assess the situation.
  2. Don't use loud headphones! You'll signal that you have fancy electronics worth stealing -- and you won't be aware of your surroundings. Likewise, don't stare at your iPhone screen as you walk or run. That Facebook status update can wait!
  3. Travel in pairs or groups. Simple safety in numbers. Especially single women!
  4. Wear a whistle, around your neck. Be prepared to whistle loudly at any possible attack. That will drive an attacker away and alert those around you.
  5. Report suspicious incidents to the police immediately. Call 911 and Detective Governo at (323) 344-5751.
  6. Schedule exercise for times when you'll have the greatest safety in numbers.
  7. NEVER leave valuables visible in your car -- even for a moment! Smash-and-grab breakins can happen anywhere, anytime in just a few seconds. If you must leave obvious valuables, stop your car before your destination and place them out of sight, in your trunk-- then proceed to your parking spot. Of course, LOCK your car and be aware of your surroundings before leaving or returning to your car.

Your Silver Lake Reservoirs Conservancy has worked hard over the years to help provide the facilities we enjoy around the Reservoir -- and to build a safe environment. The incredible popularity of our Path and the Silver Lake Meadow show how much our community enjoys these features.

And we're working to improve the safety of the Path. There's an urgent need for better lighting along the Path adjacent to the Meadow, along with other safety features.

Let's hope that the community attention from these recent incidents helps make our city agencies aware of the need for improved safety -- before any more unfortunate incidents occur. Your City Council offices need to know how important it is that we make essential safety improvements.

Soon we'll have  a new mayor and Councilmember in District 13, now occupied by Mayoral candidate Eric Garcetti. If you live in Council District 13, let candidates John Choi and Mitch O'Farrell know you want the City to make the Path safe.
