Grand Opening: Elysian Valley Community Garden

The grand opening takes this Sunday at the garden on Blake Avenue.

It's taken more than two years of work, but now the Elysian Valley has its own community garden.

Cyndi Hubach, a retired reality-television producer, owns the land along Blake where volunteers have been slowly transforming a quarter-acre parcel into a lush green oasis.

The official grand opening is this Sunday. It will feature a bevy of local dignitaries including including LA River Revitalization Corps head Omar Brownson and CD 13 council candidate Mitch O'Farrell.

There will also be an Easter Egg hunt and the unveiling of a new piece of artwork by local artist Bill Lagatutta.

About two dozen gardeners have been tilling the soil there planting everything you'd expect to find in an urban farm: kale, lettuce, carrots, herbs.

They've also pitched in and helped raise money for a fence from the Jewish Federation of Los Angeles, and gotten other grants from the Elysian Valley Neighborhood Council and Council District 13.

The Eastsider also notes that the garden is meant to be a tribute to Hubach's father, who "was into sustainable living long before it was fashionable."

Elysian Valley Community Garden is located 1816 Blake Avenue, at the corner of Rich Street in the Elysian Valley.
