This Weekend In Music: Labor Day 2011

It's a holiday weekend! Before summer slides into Fall, get out there and see some live music. Our picks below.

Thursday: Head to for a free performance courtesy of Geronimo Getty. Getty is the new project of local singer/songwriter Aaron Kyle (formerly of Le Switch) focusing on his love of classic country and western. Supporting the bill is Adeline & the Philistines. Check out our recent interview with Aaron Kyle , and out interview with the bookers of Taix's music .

Over in Los Feliz, Janet Jackson brings here game to the Greek Theatre. And remember, that's "Miss Jackson if you're nasty."

Friday: Handsome Furs, Suuns, and Talkdemonic take the stage at . Handsome Furs were once touted solely as Dan Boeckner's (of Wolf Parade) side-project with his wife Alexei Perry. Things have changed. Now a name draw in their own right, Handsome Furs have repeatedly delived the goods -- both live and on record -- since their debut LP, Plague Park, in 2007. Supporting the bill is Talkdemonic, an avante-guard instrumental duo that initially caught my ear in '07 with its spooky full-length disc, Beat Romantic. Especially curious to see how their sound translates to a live setting.

Saturday: FYF Fest returns this weekend, once again taking place in Chinatown (this year's festivities were, until recently, slated to take place downtown) at Los Angeles Historic State Park. Having partnered with Golden Voice, this year's FYF boasts the strongest, and arguably most sonically diverse, lineup of the annual event's eight year run. See the full artist lineup and schedule at the FYF website. Also, be sure to spend some time at the comedy stage -- it's often the unexpected sleeper hit of the festival.

In partnership with FYF Fest, L.A.'s Metro will be running extended late night Red & Gold Line service on Saturday near the Chinatown Station. Metro updates can be found here.
