Hundreds Gather to Remember Huell Howser at Griffith Observatory [Photos]

The memorial comes as news reports reveal the folksy broadcaster died of prostate cancer.

On a chilly afternoon at the Griffith Observatory, hundreds of people gathered Tuesday, warmed by memories of legendary broadcaster Huell Howser, who they came to honor with a sunset salute.

Howser, known for his folksy "California's Gold" show on public television, died Jan. 7. As his fans came to the Observatory lawn in Griffith Park, news media were reporting the cause of death listed on his death certificate as prostate cancer.

Los Angeles City Councilman Tom LaBonge kicked off the tribute from the steps of the Observatory just after 4 p.m. The tribute emphasized Howser's significance as an educator and a community builder, as well as his impact on the small businesses and locations he profiled.

Al Jerome, CEO of KCET, the public television station that co-produced much of Howser's programming, said it would be hard to replace the affable broadcaster.

Jerome recalled the time he saw Howser disarm a 55-year-old man at Echo Park Lake, who was distraught over losing his job.

"He immediately recognized what was going on and brought his tone down," Jerome said. "He was such a professional. One in a million can do that on camera and not have to edit."

"He didn't really report on stories," said Linda Dishman, executive director of the Los Angeles Conservancy, who first met Howser as he prepared a segment on the Watts Towers. "His way of telling the stories was to ask questions and react to the answers."

LaBonge, perhaps jokingly, called for a high school named in Howser's honor, with mascots dubbed "The Historians."

LaBonge said Howser's legacy will live on in the materials he had donated to Chapman College in Orange County.

Others who spoke about Howser from the podium included historian Charles Phoenix and Capri Maddox, a commissioner for the Los Angeles Department of Public Works.

After the speakers concluded, LaBonge led the crowd in a sing-a-long of "California Here I Come."

Then guests lingered for about 20 minutes waiting for the sun to duck below the horizon at 5:07 p.m., in what LaBonge dubbed a "California Sunset."

Those who braved the cold and parking issues included a contingent from the Los Angeles Conservancy's "Moderns."

Regina O'Brien, a television art director and Silver Lake resident who heads the group, said Howser was a frequent guest at the group's events, and showed a unique ability to engage with all kinds of people.

Howser's family had said they did not want a public or private event to honor Howser.

Howser's official death certificate shows that his remains were cremated and scattered off the coast of California, which he loved dearly.

Howser lived in Council District 4, where Griffith Observatory is located.

A group is now circulating a petition that would honor Howser with a statue at the Observatory.

Speculation is, of course, continuing about who might replace Howser, with some, including Eric Garcetti suggesting that LaBonge would be a strong candidate.

Eric Garcetti just answered our question about who he thinks should succeed Huell Howser:

"There will never be another Huell," he told Echo Park-Silver Lake Patch in a Tweet, "But @TomLaBonge has the same infectious enthusiasm for CA [sic] and he'd be a great successor."

A gem of a man and like a precious metal...Gold! Loved the man and his programs. He introduced us to the common citizens of our great and blessed state and to the beauty of California. My heart is broken.

Thank you for sharing this event and the magnificent pictures. Sunset has its own particular mood, especially Sunsets in that area. I used to sit on our front porch on Rosemary Ave and watch the shadows creep up the side of the San Raphael hills...and then the Sunlight creep down the Verdugos in the Morning. I make no apologies for my intrusions into events there even though I live far away. I did live there and perhaps it is a degree of a certain emptiness that causes me to imagine I am still there and know you. Marvelous presentation of that tribute.

My daughter used to tease me about my admiration of HH. She did a great impersonation that has become a family treasure. She and her mom (during a visit with her in San Jose) promise to visit at least one of his
"Bits of Gold", using a map of all his journeys.

I was at the event yesterday, and it was a beautiful thing to see so many people there,to show their support of Huell. There was a lot of love for him, and we will all miss him dearly...

“Many years ago, (1994) I did a video with Huell Howser, #226 Unusual Art in Downtown Los Angeles.
I believe he'd love to become a enduring part of Downtown Los Angeles as a full size bronze holding a Microphone in Grand Park. He could be interviewing park visitors. Huell Howser "Descanse en Paz"”

I would love to be there to honor this man! When I would sit down and watch Californias Gold, I would have a big grin the entire length of the show. He just made me feel good:)

I used to love his commentaries, and they were "safe enough for kindergarden children... in fact, many a moment just made me laugh, because he spoke to us all as though we were about that age... I hope the schools consider naming a school after Huell... Loved the accent too.. I think a statue at the observatory would be a fabulous tribute to Huell.. and I think Tom LaBonge would be an ideal replacement, knowing of course, there will only be one HUELL HOWSER... Tom is a true Los Angeles lover, and I am proud to have him as the leader of our district.. RIP Huell...

I was shocked and saddened to hear of his death. He was surely one of the nicest people that ever lived. You can see some of his videos and read about him at both his website and the Chapman University site. Thanks Huell.

I was and still saddened by the death of huell howser. Absolutely no one can replace him! He was still young...and I loved his sense of charisma. What a great man. I planned my entire day to watch his shows. Thanks for everything Huell..."that's amazing"

I have an idea. Along with his bronze in the park, let's get him nominated into the California Hall of Fame! There is no one as "Californian" as Huell was Californian. He truly needs to be inducted.

The fourth Amendment to the United States Constitution states that: the right of the people to beRead More secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized "this fundamental right has a tense relationship with sobriety checkpoints, at a sobriety checkpoint, drivers are necessary stopped with out reasonable suspicion, and may be tested summarily and with out probable cause, Thus the constitution would prohibit people from being stopped without a search Warrant or at least without probable cause that they have committed a crime; however, the Warrant requirement only attaches should the search be unreasonable and the Supreme Court, as shown below, decided that such stops are not unreasonable under certain circumstances, The United States Supreme Court found properly conducted sobriety checkpoints to be Constitutional, While acknowledging that such checkpoints infringed on a Constitutional Right. Again, if you see a checkpoint you can still legally turn around or change directions to avoid it asRead More long as you are not already in it. Learn your rights. But don't drink and drive. Call Northeast LAPD to go to take the LAPD Community Based Police Academy course. It's free. Of course, Northeast doesn't let others know about it. The fact that they are outlawed in some states AND what the constitution says , they areRead More UN-constitutional whether you can avoid them or not, same as checking your citizenship up to 100 miles north of Mexican border (as you simply drive down the road), no probable cause etc.

The 125th at Logan was great. Parents, students, former teachers, some alumni from the 1940's. ButRead More what is most essential to keep in mind is that Logan, a public school, has educated generations of Echo Park children, natives and immigrants, English-speaking and those learning English, respecting the diverse cultures of families that have made their homes in our community. It's a public school that serves all children, those with children with disabilities, those who have behavior issues, all children. It turns away no one. It does what public schools are supposed to do; it educates the public. And it welcomes parents to participate in decision-making bodies that can influence their child's education.
