City Extends Section of Sunset Parking Meters to Two Hours

Parking time limits are extended on Sunset while some consider creating a preferential parking district in the area.

At the request of local residents and businesses, a section of parking meters along Sunset Boulevard between Alvarado and Waterloo streets were extended by the city to a time limit of two hours, according to Councilman Mitch O'Farrell's office.

Previously, the parking meters carried a one-hour time limit, which drew complaints from business and residents along the busy stretch of Sunset, said O'Farrell's field deputy Adam Bass. The affected stretch of Sunset includes bars such as Mohawk Bend and businesses such as American Apparel.

At Tuesday's Echo Park Neighborhood Council meeting, Bass also said some residents have requested that the surrounding streets be turned into a preferential parking district, requiring permits for residents who live in the area. That step, however, will take a while to complete.

"We are still waiting as far as permit parking,” Bass said. “Just to get the district created… It is a pretty long queue”

In order to enact permit parking, Bass said O'Farrell would have to first request that the city create a parking district. Then, a majority of affected residents must sign a petition approving of the permit parking plan.
