THE MOST INNOVATIVE CRAFT BREWS YOU'VE NEVER HEARD OF ARRIVING ON THE SHORES OF THE LA RIVER

Dry River Brewing announced plans today to establish the greenest brewery in California, on the banks of the LA River.  Crafting unique and provocative brews inspired by Southern California, co-founders David Hodgins and Vanda Ciceryova are out to innovate both beer and the brewing process.

Dry River Brewing is already making a big entrance with novel offerings you just can’t say no to. Their flagship Horchata Cream Ale, a refreshingly tart Jamaica-Weisse, and a smoky-sweet Agave Smoked Wheat beer are gaining a cult following among those in the know.

"This is really a passion project for us," says Hodgins, who runs a renewable energy consultancy group as his day job.  Ciceryova comes from a hospitality background and owns a yoga studio and art gallery in Highland Park. “We love to come up with recipes that make you do a double take, but win you over with the first sip and make you wonder how they never existed before.”

“Our plan is to make our operations the most sustainable in California,” says Hodgins.  “We’ve hired an amazing team with over 50 years’ combined experience in mechanical engineering, brewery science, and green design.  Our brewing system will involve heat recovery and natural cooling, and minimizing water use while maximizing yields at the same time.  All of these things connect – conserving water reduces the need for water treatment, which also saves energy and reduces discharge in to the water treatment system.  It’s all about taking a systems approach.”

Initial plans include partnering with an existing brewery to increase production capacity while they build out their own brick and mortar location on the LA River.  According to Hodgins, they hope to serve as a magnet for other local businesses to locate along the river – and they’re putting their money where their mouth is.  They’ve committed to donate 1% of their profits to the LA River Revitalization Corporation, a non-profit dedicated to revitalizing the LA River by building bike trails, parks, bridges, and public art.

"They're naming their company in honor of the LA River.  It's these early adopters that are going to be so important to creating a city that we all want to live in and enjoy," said Omar Brownson, Executive Director for LA River Revitalization Corporation.

Hodgins and Ciceryova have turned to the crowd-funding site Kickstarter.com to raise seed money and build awareness of the project.  The clock is ticking and additional backers are needed.

They’re targeting a 2016 opening, but look for Dry River beers in local bars in early 2014.
