Update: Victim Identified in Echo Park Pedestrian Death

A detective investigating how a car killed a man on Echo Park Avenue Wednesday said he'll present the case to the District Attorney for possible criminal charges.

Update: The Los Angeles County Coroner identified the victim Thursday afternoon as Aurelio Polanco, 65. Polanco lived in the 1700 block of Echo Park Avenue, with his wife and his daughter's family.

According to a family member Polanco raised three children in Echo Park, and has lived in the same house for three decades.

Polanco was well-known along Echo Park Avenue, and regularly walked down to El Batey, the local convenience store at the corner of Echo Park and Morton avenues.

Padilla said there was some reason why the driver did not see the victim.

Padilla also said there was no evidence to suggest that the driver had excessive speed.

Detectives spent several hours in the 1700 block of Echo Park Avenue Wednesday, talking to neighbors and witnesses.

They left detailed markings on the street, some of which you can see above.

Padilla told us in an email that family members have been briefed with details about the investigation.

It has reignited calls for speed bumps, a stop sign and crosswalk at the corner where Echo Park Avenue takes a blind curve.
