Darby Crash: Now A Cocktail at Mohawk Bend

The Darby Crash cocktail is smooth and in no way conflicted. But we like the name anyway.

Angeleno Heights resident Mikey Lovechilde is thrilled Thursday night.

He's arrived to tend bar at Echo Park's Mohawk Bend and discovered a new cocktail on the menu: the Darby Crash.

Crash, of course, was the leader of L.A. punk rock legends, the Germs, who famously died of a drug overdose the night John Lennon was shot.

Lovechilde concocted the cocktail several up days before, for Mohawk Bend's bar manager Keith Taylor.

Taylor wanted something that used Art in the Age's new Rhuby liqueur, which had just been added to the restaurant's extensive artisanal offerings.

Lovechilde obliged, adding lemon juice, Ventura Orangecello Blood Orange (3/4s of an ounce), Miracle Mile Bitter's Sour Cherry and grenadine to the Rhuby base (1 1/2 ounces).

Finding a Name for the New Cocktail

Taylor liked it, and he asked Lovechilde to come up with a name. But he was stumped.

"No worries," said Taylor and conjured "the Darby Crash." It first appeared on the Mohawk Bend menu Wednesday night, when Lovechilde was off.

Lovechilde, who calls himself a "long-time punk rocker,"  couldn't be more pleased.

So were we when we tasted the drink, which is sweet, tangy and light on the tongue and tummy.

Now we wonder what rocker cocktail Mohawk Bend will mix up next.

What other dead rockers deserve a cocktail at Mohawk Bend? Tell us in the comments.

Darby didn't want to be in "The Decline of Western Civilization" because he was afraid "people will think I want to be a rock star" (back then only X wanted to be rock stars and we used to sneer at them for it). I made him be in it.

But Darby also used to say that he wanted bigger than life sized bronze statues of himself in every town square in America (seriously, he did).
I guess this will do. You made me laugh, which is not so easy these days.

And now I want a cocktail named after me. Liquor-free, please, I am perhaps the only o.g. punk who's never tasted beer (smells bad enough) -- maybe an updated Shirley Temple.

(thank you to my Echo Park pal, Scott Fajack for bringing this to my attention. I love Mohawk Bend, btw)
