Photographer Captures Photo of Mountain Lion Against Hollywood Sign

Griffith Park's most famous mountain lion is captured on camera with the iconic Hollywood sign as a backdrop.

A National Geographic photographer recently captured a rare sight in Griffith Park – a mountain lion at night with the iconic Hollywood sign as a background.

It took photographer Steve Winter more than a year to capture the image using remote cameras set up around Griffith Park, according to a post on National Geographic. By the end of it though, Winter had captured a once in a lifetime photo.

“This story was extremely difficult. The mountain lion is a very secretive animal. It has to be in order to show up in downtown L.A. and have no one ever see it but the scientists, and so it was a great relief when you have a picture like this that can become iconic," Winter said on the post. "You talk about urban wildlife and, boom, there’s the picture.”

In addition to the challenge of capturing a mountain lion on camera, Winter also faced human problems. Out of four cameras placed around Griffith Park, three of them were stolen by the end of his project.

Winter's images will appear in the December 2013 issue of National Geographic Magazine in an article titled "Ghost Cats."
