New Senior Living Project Breaks Ground in Echo Park

The 75-unit complex is tentatively expected to be completed by June 2012.

The view was stunning Friday morning from the rise at the corner of Glendale Boulevard and Park Avenue where about 50 people gathered for the groundbreaking of the new Parkview Senior Living community.

The $10 million project is being financed by the Foursquare Foundation, which was created by the sale of radio assets owned by the Foursquare Church, headquartered in Echo Park.

It will include 75 affordable senior apartment homes and a number of on-site amenities, including a chapel/community room and a dog park.

Foursquare Foundation President and CEO Greg Campbell greeted the crowd by thanking the designers and community members who worked on the project.

“This project will create almost 400 construction jobs," he reminded everyone.

“We have generated close to $600,000 in fees for the city,” he added.  “And we will generate probably about $160,000 a year in property taxes once the thing is finally built.”

L.A. City Council president Eric Garcetti commended the collaborative way the project was designed,  which eventually involved community members,  including the neighborhood council, as well as the church.

“Service is the hardest part,” he said, referring to the many meetings over two years that brought the project to life.

Foursquare's Campbell said it’s not yet certain how the residents for the community will be selected. But he said that the application process will be on a first-come, first-served basis and be open to everyone--everyone 62 years old and older, at least.

He said application details will be announced in early 2012.

Meantime, no one has stepped up to permanently take the Craftsman home formerly on the site. It was temporarily relocated to Park and Echo Park avenues in January and is awaiting an adoption.
