Gay Literary Landmark Leveled at Sunset Junction Saturday

Bulldozers took down several buildings at the original site of the "A Different Light" bookstore Saturday.

The corner at Sunset Junction that includes the original site of the legendary A Different Light bookstore has been leveled.

Bulldozers and workmen could be spotted there Saturday afternoon continuing the work, which, they say, began early in the day.

No demolition permit was posted, although a supervisor on the site said it did exist and was with another supervisor off-site.

Elizabeth Bougart-Sharkov of Silver Lake Urban Design and Preservation Committee said she talked in late August with the developer at a meeting facilitated by the Council District 13 office.

She said talk centered on finding a way to work with the developer and architect to incorporate elements of the historic structure into any new construction at the site.

The location was not protected as either a city or national landmark.

Bougart-Sharkov says she had asked the CD13 office to facilitate a meeting with the developer and architect again just a few days ago.

A Different Light moved to West Hollywood in the 1990s and finally closed in 2009, succumbing to pressures faced by many independent booksellers.

Echo Park Patch will provide more information about the site and the demolition as soon as it becomes available.
