That pedestrian safety-related topic was listed on a Silver Lake Neighborhood Council's committee's agenda Monday night. But some expected last week's pedestrian death and injury in Silver Lake to get attention, too.
Pedestrian safety was expected to be a hot topic when the Silver Lake Neighborhood Council’s Transportation and Public Works Committee convened Monday. The meeting took place just a few blocks from where a young woman died after being hit by a car Friday. It was also not far from the western edge of the Silver Lake Reservoir where a runner was injured on Tuesday. The Committee’s agenda did not specifically include these topics, but it did include a discussion of ways to improve pedestrian safety along the walk from Sunset Junction along Santa Monica Boulevard toward the Red Line stop at Vermont Avenue. Silver Lake resident Matthew Mooney is leading the effort. He said his first aim is to make locals aware of what walkers face going from …

The SLNC holds its monthly meeting Wednesday at Micheltorena School.
Update: The Silver Lake Neighborhood Council approved a grant of $1333.33 to help fund Full Circle in neighborhood schools. Wildwoods is doing further fundraising to find the $1,500 still needed. Earlier: The Wildwoods Foundation provides school-based training about water issues in local schools. Read Muffy Marracco's recent profile of the Foundation and its programs here. This fall has been a tough one for Wildwoods. Budget issues kept it from delivering programs at Mayberry Elementary, Clifford Elementary and at the new Environmental Studies Magnet at Thomas Starr King Middle School. Thanks to grants from Dwight Stuart Youth Fund and from Tom LaBonge Wildwoods will again be offering its "Full Circle" programs at these schools. According…

A Silver Lake Neighborhood Council committee will host the 6:30 p.m. meeting. Issues along Rowena Avenue will be a big focus.
You’ve heard about traffic calming, which can manifest itself as those tiny, bumpy roundabouts that show up in Santa Monica. Well, after today you may have also heard about traffic “slimming”—or as planners call it, a “road diet.” Pundits like LAist and TheEastsiderLA have already commented on the plan the Silver Lake Neighborhood Council has to narrow the width of Rowena Avenue between Glendale Boulevard and Hyperion Avenue. The goal’s to slow the flow of traffic through that much-traveled stretch, ending traffic jams and adding more space for bikes and pedestrians. That's got some who have creeped their way toward the light on Hyperion at rush hour a little nervous. The Neighborhood Council’s Urban Design & Preservation Advisory …

Council members hope to expand access to council support through the end of the fiscal year.
At its Nov. 2 meeting, the Silver Lake Neighborhood Council adopted a revised community grant funding program through the remainder of the current fiscal year. That ends June 30, 2012. The Board says it adopted the new program to allow as many organizations as possible to apply for funding in a fair and equitable manner. Grantees will be grouped into three categories. The SNLC Board allocated $4,000 to "Neighborhood Purpose Grants," for institutions serving students. The deadline for those grants are Dec. 26, 2012, with a maximum grant of $2,000. The Board also allocated $4,000 for community improvemement like graffiti removal, sidewalk cleanings and other beautification projects. Those applications are due Feb. 27, 2012. Again, no one …

The Silver Lake Neighborhood Council voted to explore that option Wednesday night at its monthly board meeting.
The motion originated in the Silver Lake Neighborhood Council's Green Committee. It asked the SLNC to "investigate the use of sheep for maintaining the [Silver Lake Reservoir] path free weed free." The council has been asked to help fund clean up efforts by LA Conservation Corp along the 2.2-mile path, which winds around the Silver Lake Reservoir. Members of the Green Committee thought animals--intially goats, then sheep-- might be another option to explore. The path around the lake features a number of plants and also attracts weeds. Funding a long-term solution to its maintenance is an issue. According to the council agenda, sheep have been used in other settings for weed control. Advocates say they are low cost, cute and eco-friendly--…

The council unanimously voted to support an effort to remove the signs posted just off Sunset Boulevard near Sunset Junction, Silver Lake's historic center of the gay community.
"The signs have been up since the height of the AIDS crisis, 1995, 1996," said Silver Lake Neighborhood Council member-at-large Charles Herman-Wurmfeld. He's talking about the signs on Griffith Park Boulevard and Hyperion Avenue near Sunset that warn against "cruising" in the area, historically a center for gay nightlife. "The signs have ey've simply outgrown their time and have become oppressive to the gay community," said Herman-Wurmfeld. That's why Herman-Wurmfeld introduced a motion at Wednesday's meeting meeting to support their removal. It passed unanimously, after many community members turned out to show their support. According to Herman-Wurmfeld, the next steps will include meeting with Sgt. Lisa Phillips, a vice officer at LAPD'…
