Video: May Day Protester Hits Cop in Downtown L.A.

A video clip went viral Wednesday after an LAPD officer was hit in the head at a May Day rally at 4th and Hill streets.

Police are asking for the public's help in identifying the person who hit an officer Tuesday at a May Day rally in downtown Los Angeles. The man hit the female officer in the back of the head with an object first thought to a skateboard. The officer was wearing a helmet and was not seriously injured, but was taken to the hospital. Authorities are now saying the object may have been a drum. Video of the incident--called "Cheap Shot at A Cop"--has already gone viral on the Internet Wednesday. Watch it in our media gallery. LAPD Commander Andy Smith has said that whoever hit the officer--who did not fall, but did have a dented helmet--will be arrested. Business Insider was quick to call the individual an Occupy LA protester in its coverage of…

The actions of the individual on that video are an anomaly. I photographed all over downtown that day and never saw actions approaching anything near this level of violence and aggression.   more ›

Occupy L.A. Visits the EP (Photo)

The Occupiers marched from Union Station to Congressman Xavier Becerra's office Tuesday afternoon, and then jogged north to Glendale Boulevard and Montana Street.

Echo Park resident and Greater Elysian Echo Park Neighborhood Council president Jose Sigala snapped this photo late Tuesday of Occupy L.A. marchers. They are at Glendale Boulevard and Montana Street. In a tweet, Sigala said he also thanked the marchers for their "commitment to working families." Occupy L.A. came to Echo Park to visit Rep. Xavier Becerra's office in the Citibank building on Sunset. The visit was in sympathy with the Occupy Movement's national "Occupy Congress" Day. Becerra represents Echo Park as part of the 31st Congressional district. Despite the EP's long history of activism, this is the first visit we know of by Occupy L.A. But, this fall, a group of Echo Park activists marched the other way, down Sunset to an Occupy L.…

Video: Occupy L.A Protester and TIME Cover Girl Sarah Mason

Reader Vincent Precht sent the accompanying video, which features a shot of Sarah Mason.

Earlier this week brought you news of the TIME "Person of the Year" cover, which featured 25-year-old Sarah Mason. A Highland, California resident, Sarah worked at a Westside photo gallery and spent many nights at Occupy L.A. during its tenure. Local freelance photographer Ted Soqui took photos of Sarah on Nov. 17 at a downtown Bank of America where many were arrested in a National Day of Action. One of those images inspired Echo Park's Shepard Fairey, who crafted the TIME cover. The attached video has another shot of Sarah, taken by Vincent Precht, who found it after going back through the video he shot that day. Will other images of Sarah emerge? Share them here.

This is Sarah, being articulate about her arrest along with other occupiers. Hopefully everyone will leave her alone now. I'm quite sure she doesn't want to be "the voice of the movement", just one of many voices. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sdscKhhXHUM&list=UUsqvPq6G5ky0QfQehz_BJZw&index=4&feature=plcp   more ›

Ted Soqui's Occupy L.A. Image Inspires Shepard Fairey TIME Cover

Soqui photographed 25-year-old Sarah Mason of Occupy L.A., on Nov. 17 just before she went inside a downtown Bank of America to be arrested.

Ted Soqui doesn’t live in Echo Park. He lives in mid-Wilshire. But when I spoke to the frequent LA Weekly photographer late Wednesday afternoon he was in Echo Park at Mohawk Bend having a drink. He was celebrating the now public news that artist Shepard Fairey of Echo Park's Subliminal Projects used one of his photos to create the cover for TIME’s 2011 Person of the Year issue, honoring "The Protester.” Soqui’s photo is of Sarah Mason, a 25-year-old Highland woman who, according to LA Observed, spent many nights at Occupy L.A. Soqui captured Mason on Nov. 17 outside the Bank of America on Grand downtown where, according to the LA Weekly, she was arrested along with others who went inside to protest. "I think it it's great that Los Angeles …

LAPD Moves Into Occupy LA Crowd

Shortly after midnight, the first of an estimated 1,200 LAPD officers began moving into the Occupy LA encampment.

Some 500 helmeted Los Angeles Police Department officers burst out of City Hall doors and raced into the Occupy L.A. encampment early Wednesday, while others began arresting a few of the protesters on the south lawn. Another 1,200 officers remain stationed around the Occupy L.A. encampment but police have moved their skirmish lines in closer to the encampment in advance of clearing out protesters. You can follow Patch's live blog from the scene here. As of midnight, officers had arrayed themselves along several downtown streets around the demonstration and by 12:15 had begun to move into the crowd. Police said an area of unlawful assembly would extend two blocks in each direction from City Hall. Protesters would be given an opportunity to …

Opinion: Trustee Bennett Kayser Occupies LAUSD

Silver Lake resident Kayser represents Los Angeles Unified School District 5, which includes Silver Lake and much of Echo Park. He sent this Opinion piece.

I am an admitted sympathizer with the Occupy movement. Recently individuals set up tents on the sidewalk outside the school district headquarters.  I said to Peggy, my wife of 40 years, “Load up the Prius while I get the tent.”  Then it occurred to me, I had already taken the most important step to “Occupy LAUSD,"  I was successfully elected to be an educational leader at the Los Angeles Unified School District.  To the surprise of many, I defeated a better-funded opponent, giving me and others concerned with the fate of public education in our community great hope. Everyday, I am working to support public education and the children of our community.  I am a warrior against the status quo.  We are in a battle against a well-funded …

Kayser has kicked off the 2013 campaign to malign those of us who want accountability and choice. Truth is the best disinfectant and let's start with the idea that it's the self-interest of the testing industry, that is driving testing. Really? Finding out what children know is expensive and a waste of valuable learning time? Growing up, I always found that tests focus the mind, they're a …   more ›

Photos: I See Hawks in L.A. Visits Occupy L.A.

Long-time Echo Park resident and musician Paul Lacques sent us the attached photos of his band performing Friday at Occupy L.A.

The alternative-country band I See Hawks in LA recorded its eponymous first album in Echo Park in 1999. The band still has close ties to the area, and appears regularly at the Echo and Echoplex, most recently as part of the Grand Ole Echo. On Friday, the group headed downtown, for an appearance at the Occupy L.A. stage. Paul Lacques, one of the founders, sent us the accompanying photos. He's performing with co-founder Rob Waller and bassist Marc Doten. Photos are by Victoria Jacobs and Mary-Austin Klein. Said Lacques in an email: It was very interesting and crazy down there, great potential for channeling people's needs and hopes, and eventually organizing. Quite rewarding to do our political songs. It felt right. Seems like Occupy L.A. …

Protesters to Camp on City Hall Sidewalks Saturday

Hundreds engaged in peaceful protests outside downtown's City Hall Saturday against "corporate greed" and the current economy. Then some continued the "occupation" by camping out overnight on the sidewalks nearby as the LAPD looked on.

Got a Hot Tip?
