Six Injured in Golden State Freeway Crash Near Los Feliz

The Colorado Street off-ramp was shut down for the investigation, according to authorities.

Six young men were injured in a single-vehicle crash on the northbound Golden State (5) Freeway in the Los Feliz area early Saturday morning. The accident just south of Colorado Street was reported at 4:16 a.m., California Highway Patrol Officer Monica Posada said. Parking: What If Meters Reset Based on Demand?

In Downtown Los Angeles will start happening Monday when LADOT kicks off a new pilot program. You'll also be able to put more money in the meter via cellphone.

What if parking prices rose and fell based on demand? Well, in Downtown Los Angeles a new program kicks off Monday to do just that. The Los Angeles Times reports that wireless pavement sensors will monitor 6,000 meters and 7,500 off-street spaces in 4.5 square miles. If it's busy, fees could jump to up to $6 an hour. If no one's waiting to park, meter time could fall down to 50 cents an hour. Read the full Los Angeles Times article here. The pilot project--called LA Express Park--also lets you put more money in your meter via cellphone. The Los Angeles Department of Transportation is in charge with funding by the U.S. Department of Transportation. Santa Monica is also testing out new parking technology. Earlier this week the city began to …

LA Fire Department Losing Precious Seconds in Response Time

Los Angeles Times analyzes more than 1 million calls for emergency medical aid

When Javier Ortiz collapsed in his Echo Park backyard, his daughter called 911. It took more than 2-1/2 minutes to dispatch the firefighters, which is almost three times the national standard for response time. The firefighters were able to reach the house in 3-1/2 minutes, but Ortiz would die of cardiac arrest several hours later. According to the Los Angeles Times, this lag in response time is not unusual. Though time is of the essence, Dispatchers are losing seconds in hundreds of thousands of medical-aid calls each year. LAUSD officials have confirmed the man worked at both Gratts Learning Academy for Young Scholars on Lucas Avenue and the Los Angeles Academy of Arts & Enterprises.

LAPD Rampart officers were among those who arrested Jorge Dominguez at his home Thursday morning. Dominguez, 25, was arrested and subsequently booked for one lewd act on a child. His bail was set at $100,000. Dominguez most recently served as a part-time teacher's aide at the Gratts Elementary School, sometimes also known as the Gratts Learning Academy for Young Scholars. According to an LAPD release, Dominguez also coached after-school sports at Gratts, and, according to the Los Angeles Times, at a second school, the Los Angeles Academy of Arts & Enterprises, in a Youth Policy Institute funded program. The Los Angeles Academy is a charter school, authorized, but not managed by LAUSD. Gratts is located on Lucas Street just below Third in …

Poll: Anti-Stadium Violence Measure Passes Assembly

Authored by Silver Lake and Los Feliz Assembly rep Mike Gatto, the bill would require California major league teams to post contact numbers for stadium security.

Assembly Bill 2464, the Improving Personal Safety at Stadiums Act, passed the Assembly, Thursday, by a unanimous 71-0 vote. Authored by local Assembly representative Mike Gatto, the bill was inspired by increased fan violence at pro stadiums, including the Brian Stow beating last March at Dodger Stadium. The bill requires major league stadiums in California to post numbers for calls or texts to contact stadium security about fan violence. The signs must be visible from the stands and in parking lots.  In a press release Gatto says it is security--not police--who is best poised to put down violent incidents, since security is inside the stadium. Like the beating of Giants fan Bryan Stow, the incidents often occur over several minutes and, …

Another good intention and another law that will not do anything. Enforce the laws already on the books. Increased security is the only way to stop violence, and even that does not always work.   more ›

7 Sheriffs Deputies on Paid Leave in 'Aggressive Policing' Investigation

The Los Angeles Sheriffs Department is investigating the existence of a possible "clique" among gang deputies that celebrates aggressive tactics--and tattoos.

Seven Los Angeles county sheriffs deputies have been placed on leave. According to the Los Angeles Times, a Sheriffs Department spokesman says they are suspected of being connected with the "Jump Out Boys," gang unit specialists that allegedly promote aggressive policing and shootings in their work. They may also commemorate shootings with a gangster-style tattoo. An insider told the Times that the Sheriffs Department called on members of the group to self-identify after a Times story based on an underground pamphlet created by the group. One stepped forward, and identified six others, forming the group now on paid leave. The Times sources an insider who said they all worked for the sheriffs' Gang Enforcement Unit at one time. But no …

Faulty Software Inflated LAFD Response Times, Report Says

An outside expert says the data should now be recalculated for a third time.

Los Angeles Fire Department Firefighters have been taking some heat for response times slower than national averages. Now, an outside expert brought in to monitor the data says it is not to be trusted. Jeffrey Godown, a statistics expert who used to run LAPD’s COMPSTAT, recommends the LAFD stop using its current software and overhaul the unit that analyzes the resulting data. The Los Angeles Times obtained a copy of Godown’s six-page report to Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa on Monday. Godown is expected to provide an oral report to the Fire Commission Tuesday. Godown has been auditing LAFD’s data-gathering and analysis after numbers showing fast response times by firefighters were questioned. New statistics were generated that showed they were…
