Founded in 1884, Betty Plasencia Elementary School currently houses two schools on one campus. There is a main school with 1,000 students and a math and science magnet school with about 140 students. The school serves children from kindergarten through fifth grade. Originally called Cortez Street School, it was renamed when it expanded across the street. Betty Plasencia was a beloved employee of the school. The main school has 61 certificated teachers. Eleanor Vargas-Page is the principal. The magnet school has nine teachers. Julie Gonzalez in principal.
