Patch Blog: The Best Fries in L.A. are French and in EP

The Ukulady Loves Taix French Fries!

Dear Blob,

The Best French Fries in Los Angeles are found at in Echo Park.  This is not a statement I take lightly.  While I have not sampled the French Fries at every LA French Friery, I am certain Taix's Potato-Stix-of-Delight are a shockingly delicious treat.  In fact, gasp-inducing.

The Ukulad & I recently opened for Ghiant and Gabby La La at Taix and several days before the show, Ukulad was compelled to confirm that we would not fail to order the fries.  Several hours before the show Gabby La La & I scheduled when in the show's running order, we would order, so's not to be too full to sing or too late to snack.

I used to live a block from Taix and was a frequent visitor to the fireplace-centric bar, which reminded me of San Francisco's Original Joes:  an old man bar/locals-only scene.  It's shifted these days to an Everyone scene, but I still recognize Old-Man-With-Hairpiece-Who-Eats-There-Every-Night; I think of him as the Hugh Hefner of Taix.

Ukulad and I had our first official dinner date at Taix (Our first lunch date was Phillipe's French Dip) and it was pleasing to return to the comfysquish chairs of our early romance.

These days Taix offers a mini-French Fry order, which irritatingly, arrives in a trendy metal cylinder for hipsters; like something you would find in Park Slope, Brooklyn.  The large order is still enough for 5 or 10 elves and comes in a comforting Old-Man-Bar Basket, similar to what you'd find a dive bar in Alabama.

The basket is overflowing with super-hot thin frites, crisp, salty, tangy & ridiculously delicious.  As much as kids love Santa, we should love the Taix fries.  I want to shove handfuls in my mouth, like a stoned teen, but the mannersome lady in me nibbles, hopefully, cutely, like a cartoon chipmunk with nut.

I enjoy a glass of house red ($5) and frites at Taix and then heading around the corner for late-night tacos or a shared quesadilla at Taco Zone parked in front of Vons.

Taix is the oldest French restaurant in LA and happily, the new hipster mini-frites appear to be the only hipster-change, so far.  I'm interested in a French Fry-Off and encourage readers 'n' blob to find a better frite in LA....

Love The Ukulady

ps:  I've eaten the entrees at Taix and am not a fan - mediocre and overpriced.  French Fry Town all the way!

pps:  The Ukulady & The Evil Sandwiches will be playing at Clifton's Cafeteria on Sunday, September 25th Noon - 2pm for the LA Visionary Association's monthly Salon!  Swing by and say Meeep!
