Second Annual Big Wave Surf Contest Takes Over Silver Lake Reservoir Monday

Artist and organizer Wowzy apologizes for the late notice.

Unusually high surf will be coming to the Silver Lake Reservoir this Monday, prompting members of the Silver Lake Pray for Surf Association to launch the second annual Silver Lake Big Wave Surf Contest.

Due to the sudden nature of the impending huge and gnarly surf, we did not have time to contact any of the several dozen Big Wave surfers around the world who have been waiting anxiously to hear that the contest was on. Believe me I am not looking forward to having to deal with their disappointment and anger over missing an opportunity to ride some really monster waves here in Silver Lake.

Well, the show must go on so we are having to make due with some of the local surfers that are on our alternate waiting list. They may be lacking in training, equipment and common sense, but, as we all know, there is no shortage of coolness and downright hipster bravado available here in Silver Lake.

Wowzy says absent jetskis, specially-modified Vespa scooters will tow the surfers on to the larger waves, adding that the head of the Silver Lake Scooter Club says it will be "no problem."

A limited number of artist-designed posters for the event will be available at Baller Hardware on Hyperion Avenue this week.

Wowzy says stop by and ask for Carol if you'd like one.

You'll also see some posted around the Silver Lake area.
