Echo Park School Test Results are Mixed, Part III

The number of elementary school students in Echo Park who are proving to have proficient or advanced knowledge of English and math are all over the map, according to state tests.

We've been examining Echo Park elementary school students' performance on the California State Standards Test (CST), which are given to all public school kids across the state. 

The State Board of Education says that "proficient" is their desired goal for all students.

Statewide, 54% of students scored in the Proficient or Advanced levels for English and Language Arts, while 50% proved Proficient or Advanced in Math.

English, Language Arts: Results are mixed, with one grade falling above the state average, two falling below and two way below.

Only 24% of third graders showed proficient or advanced knowledge of English-language arts. That number wasn't any better for sixth graders: 29%. About half of second and fifth graders showed proficient or advanced knowledge of ELA. That number rose to 58% for fourth graders.

Mathematics: Three grades were consistent with the rest of the state, one was above and one was far below.

Only 25% of sixth graders showed proficient or advanced knowledge of mathematics. Meanwhile, the second, third and fourth graders were right in line with the rest of the state, with about half the students showing proficient or advanced knowledge. The fifth graders stood out, with 60% showing proficient or advanced knowledge.

English, Language Arts: Results vary by grade, but only one grade showed knowledge consistent with the rest of the state's students.

About half of the second graders and fifth graders showed proficient or advanced knowledge of English-language arts at Rosemont Elementary school, which is just below the state average of 54%. But only 27% of third graders showed proficient or advanced knowledge of ELA. Fourth graders performed the best on this test, with 57% showing proficient or advanced knowledge of ELA.

Mathematics: Two grades show knowledge consistent with the rest of the state's students, while two grades performed better than the state average.

50% of fifth graders and 55% of second graders showed proficient or advanced knowledge of math, which is in line with the state average of 50%. Meanwhile, 61% of third graders and 74% of fourth graders performed proficiently or above in math.
