Echo Park School Test Results are Mixed, Part I

Echo Park students are all over the map when it comes to performing at proficient or advanced levels in English and math.

The results of the California State Standards Test (CST) were released on Monday, and the results for Echo Park schools are mixed when compared to students across all of California.

Statewide, 54% of students scored in the Proficient or Advanced levels for English and Language Arts, while 50% proved Proficient or Advanced in Math.

The State Board of Education marks "proficient" as their desired goal for all students.

Allesandro Elementary School

English and Language Arts: three grade levels scored better than the state average of 54%, while two scored below.

Second, fourth and sixth grade students at Allesandro Elementary School scored better than the state average in English and Language Arts. Sixth graders had the highest number of students score proficient or advanced: 81%. Meanwhile, only 39% of third graders and 49% of fifth graders proved proficient or advanced.

Mathematics: all grade levels scored higher than the state average of 50%.

All grade levels at Allesandro Elementary School scored above the state average in mathematics. But, the sixth graders out-scored the rest of the state by leaps and bounds: 94% scored at the proficient or advanced level.

Elysian Heights Elementary School

English and Language Arts: Three grade levels scored at or just above the state average of 54%, while two grade levels scored below.

Second, fourth and fifth graders were pretty much in line with the state average for English and Language Arts. However, third graders scored below average, with 45% performing at proficient or above levels. Sixth graders lagged way behind, with only 25% at proficient or above levels.

Mathematics: four grade levels scored above the state average of 50%, while one scored far below.

Sixth graders lagged behind, with only 34% proving proficient or advanced at math. Second and third graders are just above the state average, with 52 and 57% scoring proficient or above in mathematics respectively. Fourth and fifth graders scored well above the state average, at 70 and 73% respectively.

Clifford Street Elementary School

English, Language Arts: The results are all over the map, depending on the grade. Two grades majorly out-scored the state average of 54%, two are on par with the state average, while one is far below.

The second and fourth graders scored well above the state average, with 70 and 84% proving proficient or advanced knowledge of English and Language Arts. Fifth and sixth graders were pretty much on par with the state average, while third graders were way below, with only 23% proving proficient or advanced mastery of ELA.

Mathematics: Four grades scored above the state average of 50%, while one just missed the mark.

The second graders are well ahead of the state average, with 75% proving proficient or advanced at math. Meanwhile, 59% of third graders are proficient or above, and 62% of fourth and sixth graders perform proficiently or above. 48% of fifth graders prove proficient or above at math, which is just below the state average.
