The New Garbage Contract (Discussion)

What are your impressions of the new city-wide Athens Trash Service one week after the service has started?

It's been one week since Athens took over the garbage service in Altadena and if our email box, sites comments, and the local email groups are any indicator, people have a lot of questions and a lot to say about it.

We've received email from people who have had issues, including one who says his trash never got picked up last week.

We've seen plenty of comments about confusion over what to recycle, and our own about the green waste program.

So have you noticed any difference?  How has the service worked for you so far?  Do you have any questions or issues you are hoping to get addressed?  Let us know in the comments section below.

Dan, you are - once again - the answer man! So....wine bottles can go. Excellent. Hic. They really are following local town websites and responding! How do we get some of those Composting Bins the poster from Redondo Beach was mentioning?? =)

After the winds the other day, it is clear that one green bin is not enough. I called to get a second one and it will not show up until October at the earliest. In the meantime I'm supposed to use my "only three in a year" pickups of bags. I don't think it is my problem to solve; Athens should be picking up trash even if they can't provide containers.

Check out the Athens website for an interesting video on their recycling program. Their facility does very thorough sorting and recycling, and that's why they put trash and recycling bin contents in the same truck.

If you have any problems with your service with Athens Services in City of Altadena contract General Manager Thor Schmidt at 818-254-5459 or you can email him at TSchmidt@athensservices.com I don't think they should put the Blue and Black bin trash in the same truck, please report this to the city officials, next time take video if you can.

What? There are more rules and guidelines on what trash to put where, and how to put it there, I'd have to make a career change simply to comply. The consumers are doing all the work and somebody else is being compensated. What's wrong with this picture? My pickup day was Tuesday, 09-06; however, trash wasn't collected until Wednesday, because of the holiday. Guess this would be better understood if the regular pickup day was scheduled for Monday, day of the holiday. One pickup, a day late and already I have a bill. Perhaps Athens should offer the consumers an incentive for following all their guidelines, i.e., a month of free service.
