Tell Us: What Should Be Done With the Old Rampart Station?

Organizers have held several meetings about what they see as a troubled future for the building. What do you think should be there?

It's a fabled facade from an earlier time: The LAPD's old Rampart Division building.

You can see it most famously in the vintage television series Adam 12, where it appeared countless times as cops Pete Molloy and Jim Reed rolled out and rolled in.

Most recently, you can catch it in the 2011 film Rampart, based on a James Ellroy screenplay, that is languishing in awaiting-wide-release hell.

The Rampart Division moved to a new building on Wilshire in 2008, and the now empty building at Temple Street and Benton Way is awaiting a new future--as the home of Metro division's SWAT and other operations, as the EastsiderLA reported recently.

Some--including Anne Hars, a volunteer at LA CAN--don't like that the community wasn't consulted along the way.

Hars says that her research--which is extensive--shows little record of community meetings or other consulations as to the fate of the structure.

Meantime, the renovations at Rampart are set to begin this month.

Hars and others still hope to ensure that the nearby Rampart Village community has a voice in what finally lives there.

At a meeting Thursday, she and others planned a few steps for gathering community input.

They also asked those on hand share their ideas about how the building might be used.

These include:

  •         As a space for children to play
  •         As a community center
  •         As an adult school to stem the overflow from Lafayette Adult school

They are seeking more ideas and want to hear from you. Add your ideas in comments.

The group will hold its next meeting on Thursday, Jan. 26, at 6:30 p.m. at Vista Charter School, 2900 W. Temple St.
