Plaza at Sunset and Griffith Park Boulevards to Open Mar. 4

It will provide dedicated pedestrian space in the center of Silver Lake's Sunset Boulevard retail stretch.

The triangle on Sunset between Maltman Avenue and Edgecliff Drive has long been a place for community members to gather face-to-face, particularly at the twice-weekly farmers markets there.

The new park opening formally there on Mar. 4 will only make it more of a magnet.

It will be called Sunset Triangle Plaza, and according to some it is the city's first pedestrian plaza.

Streets for People (SP4), which is organizing the community opening, says the new space draws "its inspiration from the successful pedestrian plazas created with a painted street surface potted plants and moveable tables and chairs in New York and San Francisco."

Perhaps that's why Griffith Park Boulevard between Edgecliffe Drive and Maltman Avenue will also be closed to vehicles for up to a year.

SP4 says additional parking spaces will be created along Sunset Boulevard to replace those being lost in the closure.

Meantime, Edgecliffe will remain open for access around the park from Sunset.

The community opening at Sunset Triangle Plaza goes from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
