Sidewalks Will Be Fixed Along Sunset Boulevard in Echo Park

The project is expected to be completed in September.

Work began Thursday on a project that will fix broken sidewalks and replace trees along Sunset Boulevard in Echo Park.

The project includes sidewalk repairs, the placement of solar-powered trash receptacles and the installation of benches and crosswalks at the corner of Sunset Boulevard and Echo Park Avenue.

Federal Transportation Grant money is being used to fund the $853,000 project.

Work on the project began in 2009 by Rep. Xavier Bacerra, D-Los Angeles, and the office of former Councilman Eric Garcetti.

Bacerra said communities should have spaces they can be proud of.

"When we worked tirelessly then in 2009 to get tax payer dollars from Angelenos to come back here to Los Angeles, to work in the field of transportation, to make our streets and our sidewalks a better place for our community, it was nothing more than returning the tax payer dollars," Bacerra said.

Councilman Mitch O'Farrell said priorities were made "with a tremendous amount of community input."

The project is expected to be completed in September.
