Road Closure: Los Feliz Boulevard Is the New Big Dig

The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power is installing new underground electric cables in a three-phase project that will last until the fall.

Commuters know that the going on Los Feliz Boulevard is never easy.

Well, expect molasses during daytime hours through the fall.

The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power is installing electric cables. And it will take some time. The three-phase project will snarl traffic on the busy thoroughfare that connects Hollywood to Northeast Los Angeles and the 5 Freeway that will last until the fall.

Phase 1 begins Tuesday and continues through early May.

It will primarily impact the corner of Hillhurst Avenue and Los Feliz Boulevard, where left turns for drivers going north on Hillhurst won't be possible between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.

Westbound traffic through the intersection will be reduced to a single lane.

The bus stop at the corner of Hillhurst and Los Feliz will also be relocated.

(See more details in the gallery above.)

Surrounding streets are also likely to clog, with drivers seeking alternative routes on Franklin Avenue, St. George Street, Griffith Park Boulevard and other nearby streets.

The real digging starts in mid-May, when Phase 2 of the project kicks off. Traffic will be reduced to a single lane in each direction along stretches of Los Feliz Boulevard west of Vermont. No turns off of Vermont onto Los Feliz Boulevard will be allowed.

Phase 3, which will happen mostly in evening hours, will conclude in September.

The city plans to station traffic control officers at major intersections during the project.

City councilmember Tom LaBonge is also keeping his eye on the project. (See his letter above.)
