Echo Park Neighborhood Council Elections in Audit, 5 Others Certified

The five day waiting period for challenges to Saturday's voting has officially passed, with only the results in the Greater Echo Park Elysian race on hold.

65 candidates over five neighborhood councils can breathe a sigh of relief--now that the five day waiting period after voting on Saturday has ended.

The results in the Atwater Village, Elysian Valley Riverside, Greater Griffith Park, Rampart Village and Silver Lake are officially certified.

The Department of Neighborhood Empowerment, which oversees the neighborhood councils and their elections, officially posted the results on its site late Thursday.

But, as of Friday morning, the results for the Greater Echo Park Elysian Neighborhood Council remained preliminary, due to an audit.

The two candidates for president are separated by two votes and many had expected a recount under those circumstances.

And they got it, though the final canvas could be posted as early as Friday, according to election coordinators.

The Eastsider reported Thurday night that the tied race between Joe Malone and Maidel Luevano in for a Region 3 seat on the Silver Lake Neighborhood Council was decided by drawing straws.

Luevano drew the shorter one to win Thursday night at Van Nuys City Hall.

And keep an eye on the site for more neighborhood council election news.

How to run for Neighborhood Council

Note: A previous version of this story noted that Luis Lopez, elected to the Atwater Neighborhood Council, was the same Luis Lopez running for an Assembly District 51 seat.  We regret the error.
