5 Things You Need to Know Today: Jan. 20

Echo Park Lake prepares for a cleanse, teens meet to talk about books, and Lot 1 gets groovy.

1. Edendale Teens Book Club meets at 5 pm at the Edendale branch of the Los Angeles Public Library, 2011 W Sunset Blvd.  The club is open to all community teenagers.  Check out the club's blog or stop by to join the fun.    The club reads one book a month but sponsors other activities including cooking classes and SAT practice tests as well.

2. The Echo Park Chamber of Commerce meets at Taix Restaurant, 1911 W Sunset Blvd. from 7 to 9 pm.  Headed by local business owner Mitchell Frank, the chanber works to promote and serve the businesses and people of the Echo Park community.  While somewhat outdated, the EPCC website provides more information and contacts.  Stop by the meeting to learn more about the chamber and perhaps join the discussion.

3. The Homo-Centric reading series is on at Stories Books and Cafe, 1716 Sunset Blvd., starting at 7:30 pm.  The floor is open to GLBTQI writers to read from their works in a spirit of community.   Meeting monthly, learn more about the series by visiting Stories' website.

4.  C-Horse, Cobalt Cranes, and Woolen will be performing on the casual stage of Lot 1 Cafe beginning at 8:30 pm.  The all ages show costs $5.  Lot 1 serves beer and wine as well as a dinner menu and is located at 1533 Sunset Blvd.  Check out Facebook for details regarding the line-up.

5.  Changes are coming to Echo Park Lake.  Signs have been spotted around the lake announcing the $64.7 million clean up that will shut parts of the  park and create a bit of a mess for almost two years.   Stop by to see for yourself, take some last photos, and learn more.   California Public Radio offers an audio interview with engineers who are designing and working on the clean up project.
