Volunteers to Distribute Fliers in Search for Hit-and-Run Driver

A $25,000 is being offered for information leading to the person who struck Damian Kevitt while he was cycling.

Volunteers will distribute fliers around Griffith Park Sunday to inform the public of a $25,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the hit-and-run driver of a minivan that struck and severely injured a cyclist in the park.

The timing and location of the flier distribution correlate to the time and location of the hit-and-run, said Justin Hager, an organizer of the flier distribution.

There is a strong possibility the driver was playing soccer at or near the field before the accident, Hager said.

The accident occurred around 11:35 a.m. on Feb. 17, a Sunday, and the driver was possibly wearing a soccer jersey, according to Hager.

Damian Kevitt was struck by a light-colored minivan, possible a gray Toyota Sienna, which might have had a "for sale" sign posted in the rear window, Hager said.Kevitt was hit on Zoo Drive, near Griffith Park's Ferraro Soccer Complex and Dog Park, according to Hager.

Kevitt was dragged 600 feet on an on-ramp to the Golden State (5) Freeway until falling from the vehicle, Hager said. Kevitt had 20 bones broken and doctors needed to amputate his right leg below the knee, Hager said.

Kevitt's left foot is missing tissue and skin and may also need to be amputated. The extremely severe road rash was down to the bone on Kevitt's left elbow. His buttocks will need skin grafts, according to Hager.

Anyone with information on the case is asked to call the California Highway Patrol's Altadena Station at (626) 296-8100 or (323) 259-2010.
