This official incident report was provided by Lt. Wes Buhrmeister of LAPD's Rampart Division.
Here is the official incident report for the incident Sunday that brought a heavy police presence and an LAPD SWAT unit to the 600 block of Maltman Avenue in Silver Lake.
It was provided by Lt. Wes Buhrmeister of LAPD's Rampart Division:
At about 5:35 pm, a citizen phoned our Communications Divison, and advised a friend of his was at his residence on Maltman Ave., and was threatening suicide with a handgun. The subject, a male, 50 years of age, had a history of substance abuse, but no known suicide attempts.

Several units responded and attempted to make contact with the subject (the name is withheld due to medical confidence reasons, as he was later housed for psychiatric evaluation). Based upon the caller's statement, it was felt that it was credible the subject was inside the residence, but not answering the door. The area was contained, and communication attempts continued.
During this time, at about 6:50 pm, a second caller, an acquaintance of the subject, phoned the Department. This caller said the subject was armed with a rifle and was going to kill himself. Based upon this information, the SWAT unit responded. Communication was attempted by the SWAT officers, again with no response.

At about 9:00 pm, SWAT forced open the door of the residence, and no response was received. In the event the subject may have been laying in wait, a camera-equipped robot was sent in, and the subject was found in the front room on the floor, apparently unconscious. Officers entered to find the subject in fact unconscious, with empty liquor and pill bottles nearby.
He was transported by ambulance to a hospital for emergency treatment, and subsequent psychiatric evaluation. His condition was non-life-threatening. No firearms were found in the house. Our Mental Evaluation Unit is handling the investigation.
