A motorcyclist was hospitalized in grave condition today after losing control during a street race and slamming into a fire station in Echo Park, police said.
The rider, a man of about 20 or 21 whose name was not released, struck the front of Los Angeles Fire Department Station 20 at the intersection of Sunset Boulevard and Mohawk Street around 11.35 p.m. Thursday, said Los Angeles police Sgt. Rhiannon Talley.
She said LAPD officers who had been conducting DUI checks were at a nearby convenience store on Sunset when they saw the motorcycle and a late model Toyota Camry or Mitsubishi Lancer racing.

Talley said the officers saw side-to-side contact between the motorcycle and the car, then almost immediately heard the crash into the firehouse.
Officers from the LAPD Central Traffic Division were at the scene, and the accident was being investigated as a hit- and-run because the car driver fled.
