Silver Lake Water Plume -- Videos

A hit-and-run driver clipped off a fire hydrant near Cafe Tropical on Friday afternoon.

A water plume greeted drivers heading down Sunset around 4:30 p.m. Friday.

The wall of water shot up after a driver clipped off a fire hydrant. He was headed east on Sunset Boulevard just before Reno Street in Silver Lake near Cafe Tropical.

Firefighters from LAFD Station 20 quickly arrived and turned the spigot off.

A witness said the driver took off down Reno after crashing into a mesh fence.  The witness told Echo Park Patch he was driving a red car, maybe a Grand Prix.

You can see a photo of the driver's license plate in the accompanying photo gallery.

Afterwards, two men carried the decapitated fire-hydrant into Sugar, a hair salon on Sunset Boulevard.

Apparently, fire hydrants are made to break off to minimize injury to drivers who hit them.
