UPDATED: Gang-Related Shooting in Echo Park Area Wednesday Night Leaves Youth Critically Injured

A 17-year-old was shot at least twice outside an apartment building on South Union Place late Wednesday, and was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

UPDATE at 11:56 a.m.: Detective Gilbert Alonso of the LAPD's Rampart gang unit said that the young man still remains in critical condition.

"I know they cracked his chest open to work on him," he said after mentioning that the homicide unit was originally contacted when the shooting occurred. "He's still alive."

There is no other information yet regarding the shooting or possible suspects.

Previously: LAPD Rampart gang detectives are investigating the shooting of a 17-year-old male late Wednesday night.

According to Lt. Wes Buhrmester of Rampart, the young man was standing outside an apartment building at 225 South Union Place.  He was approached by two men in their early twenties who were on foot.

According to Buhrmester, the pair asked the young man if he was a member of a certain gang, then without warning fired multiple shots, which hit the victim in the back and lower legs. They then fled on foot. Police were called.

The victim was transported to the hospital in critical condition.
