Fire Engulfs Sci-Fi Star's Elysian Heights Home

Over 150 firefighters helped knock down a house fire in Elysian Heights early Wednesday evening. Two water-dropping helicopters were also on the scene.

In 90-degree heat, 165 Los Angeles City firefighters fought a house fire at 1357 N. Elysian Park Drive on Wednesday evening.

The blaze caused an estimated $300,000 damage to a three-story century-old home owned by the family of Ann Robinson, a science fiction film actress in the 1950s.

Robinson starred in the 1953 sci-fi classic movie The War of the Worlds and, according to IMDB.com, still appeared regularly at conventions and trade shows. She also had a cameo in Steven Spielberg's 2005 War of the Worlds remake.

The initial alert came at 5:41 p.m. via 911. The fire was knocked down by 7 p.m. according to Erik Scott of the Los Angeles City Fire Department.

According to one report, the narrow streets had many firefighters parking at the base of Douglas Street and walking in to fight the fire.

Two water-dropping choppers were also called in to fight the blaze, which was located near a brush area as well as some apartments.

The fire began in the basement of the multi-story structure and spread up through the building through the attic.

According to Scott, firefighters quickly extinguished the fire on the first floor, but found the fire burning below and above them.

Firefighters used chainshaws to fight the blaze on the roof, which was complicated by the presence of live ammunition in the structure.

No one was injured in the fire, although, according to comments on the EastsiderLA, one of Robinson's dogs is still not accounted for.

The cause of the blaze is still under investigation.
