Cpt. Gary William Walters has joined the Los Angeles Police Department's Rampart Division as co-commander. He started March 10, with his first official days in the office this week.
Walters arrives from the 77th Street Community Police station, which covers the Crenshaw district and parts of South Los Angeles. This is the first time he has served as a commander.
Walters joins Stephen Ruiz in overall responsibility for running the division. Rampart Lt. Wesley Buhrmeister calls him "very tech savvy" and a "nice guy."
The change comes as part of a number of shake-ups within the LAPD's Central Division. Gina Sanders, Rampart's former co-commander, is now at Hollenbeck Station in Boyle Heights, with another female co-commander, Anita Ortega.
Sanders too calls Walters a "nice guy" and says she will miss Rampart, "her favorite place ever" though she looks forward to "helping Hollenbeck."
Keep an eye on the site for more about Walters and changes at Rampart.
