SWAT Unit Called Before Man Surrenders Voluntarily

LAPD's SWAT unit was called after a man barricaded himself in a house on Mohawk Drive in Silver Lake for almost two hours Monday evening.

A man barricaded inside a house in the 800 block of Kodak Drive in Silver Lake Monday evening surrendered voluntarily to police, but not before the LAPD's SWAT team was called in. Fortunately, SWAT didn't have to take action, and no one was injured in the incident.

The man was then taken away on a gurney by paramedics. It was reported that he may have taken a large dose of medication, so the move was precautionary.

According to LAPD Capt. Gina Sanders, the incident began when police responded to a domestic violence call from the man's wife.

The man's wife had run out of the house at some point, leaving him to yell that he "had a gun and would shoot" when police approached.

According to Sanders, at that point "we locked down the house."

Police tried several times to communicate with the man by telephone, and, according to bystanders, eventually established communication.

An LAPD SWAT unit was called, but the man had surrendered by the time they arrived.

According to Sanders, officers chased the man down Kodack Drive for a bit, tackling him, but no one was injured.

And the man turned out to have no weapons in his possession.

"This was an easy situation," said Sanders. "People can get hurt. We prefer things to go this way."
