12:30 am Tuesday: Police still have no suspect after recovering a man's dead body found on a hillside Monday night.
According to City News Service, the LAPD says the victim was shot once in the head. Police also say he had no gang affiliation and may have been homeless. The motive for the slaying is a mystery.
The hillside begins where the 2100 block of Bellevue Avenue dead ends off Alvarado Street and rises west. Bellevue Avenue then continues above the hill toward the Dream Center. Access between the two sections is by staircase.
Several tents had been pitched on the hillside next to the stairs, and people were living there.
According to City News Service, witnesses heard people arguing and then shots were fired.
The Eastsider LA says witnesses told police that the victim had been seen at least once before talking to people at the camp.
Police, an LAPD photographer, and several plain clothes detectives were on the scene at least as late as 10:30 p.m. Monday night.
According to one report, police dogs were also used to search for weapons.
