Update: Investigators now say that the bludgeoning death at a homeless camp near Bellevue Avenue and West Edgeware road took place around noon on Monday.
According to Det. Jeff Cortina, there may have been a fight in the camp, which resulted in the death.
Several passersby heard the incident and one of them phoned 9-1-1 to alert police and firefighters.
The victim is said to be a man in his late 50s or early 60s, a long-time resident of the camp who may be familiar to locals.
Earlier: Monday afternoon LAPD Rampart detectives were investigating what could be a possible murder at a homeless camp near the 101 Freeway in Echo Park.
The camp is just south the intersection of Bellevue Avenue and West Edgeware Road behind the fence.
The homicide detective on the scene Jeff Cortina said the victim was likely a homeless man who was "possibly murdered."
Cortina was not able to provide other specificsm though the Eastsider quotes Rampart homicide detective John Motto as saying the victim may have been"bludgeoned" to death.
At this time, there is no suspect in the case.
According to Cortina, police and firefighters responded to a 9-1-1 call about the death just after noon on Monday.
Cortina said the man may have died as early as 3 a.m.
