While it may seem obvious to most, the Los Angeles Police Department wants to make it explicitly clear that shooting ammunition into the sky is not an appropriate or legal way to ring in 2013.
On Thursday, LAPD Chief Charlie Beck and Sheriff Lee Baca to launch the "Don't Shoot" campaign, which seeks to limit the practice of celebratory gunfire.
They said that thousands of “Don’t Shoot” flyers and posters have been printed and will be posted throughout the greater Los Angeles area.

Law Enforcement officials will also be using newly developed "Shotspotter" technology--which is used to track down the source of gunfire--to track down those responsible for shooting guns.
“It can tell the Deputies where the suspect is located and the data allows them to develop violence suppression strategies and tactical plans. This has been extremely successful in our crime fighting initiative and one of many tools that help decrease crime in the County” Baca said in an official statement released by LAPD.
